Dear Mr Shortz

Re 51 Across in today's puzzle:

Anime is a medium, not a genre.

It would be a pretty all-inclusive genre that encompassed soap opera, coming of age, historical drama, war, crime, samurai, mystery, science fiction, horror, children's stories, martial arts... So all inclusive it would make "genre" a pretty meaningless word.

Medium, Mr Shortz - a medium.

I'm reminded of an old "Wizard of Id" cartoon. The wizard is in his lab, stirring his cauldron, and his wife comes down the stairs and says, "You know what? I'd like to hold a seance." "It'll never work," says the wizard. "Why not?", asks his wife. "Because," the wizard replies, "No one will ever believe that you're a medium."

In the final panel, the wizard has been stuffed head-first into his cauldron, and his wife is stomping angrily back up the stairs.
