The Week in Entertainment

Film: Lady in the Water - I liked it. It was cleverly written - nice metatextual elements - and interesting.

DVD: Started 8 Clouds Rising - it's not bad at all! Must get the rest.

TV: Stargate SG-1 (I particularly enjoyed this exchange between Landry and Mitchell: "Are you sure you want to take [Vala]? Dr Jackson isn't going with you and he's the one person she pays attention to." "Most of the time." "You know you can't control her?" "That's just par for the couse, sir." "What do you mean?" "Well, sir, Carter and I are the same rank, Teal'c's an alien, and Jackson's a civilian. I came to terms long ago with the fact that I don't control anybody.") Stargate Atlantis (and why is Ronan the only one on his whole planet with that hairstyle?); The Daily Show and The Colbert Report (I don't usually mention these but I generally do watch them - same with the BBC World Report.) (And Cash in the Attic, for that matter...) I caught an episode of The Night Stalker, and while it was okay, I don't understand why they insist on making a nice program using all the names of characters from some other show. This is a decent enough program - but it's not The Night Stalker.

Read: Piece of My Heart (I do love the Alan Banks novels!); In Other Words, Mona Baker's excellent translation course book; At the Water's Edge, Carl Zimmer's wonderful book on evolution (I adore William Flower's line "I happen to have in my pocket a monkey's brain."); Dead Connection - it did catch me by surprise.
