NCAA WCWS Finals - Game 2

Alexia Clay
Second game - if UT wins it's over; if Arizona does, they play again tomorrow night. It's Abbot vs Moet again - they've both thrown every pitch for their respective teams in the whole series.

Horiuchi up with 2 on (Doepking walked, Clay singled), 2 out, 2nd inning - but Moet strikes her out. It's 0-0 after 2.

India Chiles is on first with 2 out and Tiffany Hutt strikes out. We stay scoreless.

Doepking sacrifices Callahan (pinch running for Hammond) to second and Mowatt can't make the play - both safe, no one out for Alexia Clay. But the freshman hits it right to third and she turns the double play. Now two outs (runner at 2nd) and Griffin up, but side retired.

Scoreless through four.

Bottom of fifth, Horiuchi walks to lead off. Posey shows bunt and even though Candrea comes out to talk to his infield, Posey bounces it right in front of the plate and Balko can't do anything. Posey and Horiuchi both on, nobody out, and India Chiles up - best hitter in UT history and led the SEC at .437 (SEC Player of the Year). She also shows bunt once, but at full count is showing hitting away. Chopper to short but Fox can't make a play. Bases loaded with nobody out for Lindsay Schuztler - FC takes Horiuchi at home. 1 out for Tiffany Huff. Pops up to second. Runners everywhere with 2 out for Tonya Callahan. Flies out to Fox.

Scoreless through five.

Monica Abbott (NCAA Player of the Year) has set the NCAA career and single-season strikeout records; and she just now set the NCAA World Series record, too: 65.

Bottom of the sixth. Griffin walks with two out. Horiuchi grounds to third.

On to the seventh, still scoreless.

Top of the seventh, two out, and Arizona gets their first runner tonight, Bannister getting a walk and Duran running for her. But Akimine strikes out looking, and it's on to the bottom of the seventh.

BTW Philip Fulmer and Pat Summitt are both in the stands, watching and hoping that the Weeklys can bring one more National Championship Trophy home to Knoxville.

Kenora Posey leads off with a bunt, but doesn't beat it out. India Chiles strikes out. Schutzler drops it onto the outfield grass - and she's a great base stealer. Huff goes to 3-0, then 3-1, and then walks. Game-winning run at 2nd base, two outs, and Tonya Callahan to the plate - long ball hitter, power hitter, 60 RBI this year.1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1... hitter's count. A fly ball to left ... to the left fielder, that is.

Extra innings, scoreless.

Three up, three down for Arizona.

Shannon Doepking leads off with a base hit - Nicole Kajitani comes on to run for her. Clay is up; tries to lay down a sac bunt but fouls it back; tries again and pops it up. One down. Griffin 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, full count - strikes out. Clay... 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, grounds out.

On to the ninth...

Fox deep in the hole to Horiuchi; one out and a base runner. Leles at the plate, lines it to Griffin and she gets the lead runner. Two out, runner at first, Mesa at bat. She pops up to Posey.

Posey leads off by slapping a single through the hole into right. Winning run on first (again), and Chiles up. Posey by the way is 27 for 30 on the year in stolen bases. She and Chiles are both fast. Chiles 1-1, 2-1. Posey steals!!!!! Barely makes it but she does!!!! The camera had caught Ralph Weekly standing with his eyes closed - maybe he was scared to watch. Chiles strikes out. Schutzler comes up and there's a discussion between Balko and Mowatt - they might walk Lindsay and indeed they do. Two on, one out, and Tiffany Huff up. (Ralph's still not watching). Huff 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2... fouled back, fouled off, (Ralph is standing in the dugout with his finger on the the T in the "I got you" slogan on the wall) into the gap but caught by Lowe. Two down. Callahan 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, foul off her hands 2-2, (Ralph still can't watch - Karen's in the third base box, in case you're wondering), 3-2. Full count, two on, two on. Change-up and Callahan is frozen.

On to the tenth.

Come on, guys. It's 10:52 and I gotta be up at 5!

Bannister punches one into left. Akimine lays down the bunt. One out, run at 2nd, Balko up. Rodgriguez runs for Bannister (now she's out, having been run for in the 7th). Balko bunts and Posey drops it!!! Runners at the corners, one out. Acton up - Abbott still humming it in at 68mph - 1-0. Ralph out to talk to them. 1-1 to Acton. 2-1. She bounces one to Horiuchit, but Rodriguez bends around the tag at home and Arizona has the lead - the first run off Abbott in the Series. Lowe moves them over - two outs, two on, Arredondo at bat but flies out to Chiles. And it's 1-0, Arizona, going to the bottom of the tenth.

Last chance tonight (but there's always tomorrow).

Taryne MowattDoepking up. Taryne Mowatt's change-up is still working. 1-2, 2-2, 3-2. Strikes her out on the change-up, swinging. Clay, who did hit a home run off Mowatt last night, steps in. Quickly 2-0. Grounded to short, but Fox throws it away! Game-winning run to the plate for the Vols in the person of Anita Manuma. 0-1, 0-2, (shot of Fulmer and Summitt and the palyby-play announcer says "Man, we got clocks in our sports! This could go on all night!" But probably not...) Manuma strikes out. Last hope. Horiuchi facing Mowatt, 2-0 very quickly. And then she grounds to 2nd.

Arizona stays alive, winning 1-0. Series is tied.

And we play again tomorrow.
