David Plotz, who's blogging the Bible for Slate, has reached Chronicles (the end, since he's doing the Jewish Bible). He has run into a number of problems - things that confuse him or make him uncomfortable, and yet - after all this time - he can seriously ask:
Chronicles counts only 10 generations between Jacob and David. Considering that the Bible tells us that the Israelites spent 400 years enslaved in Egypt, 40 years in the desert, and another couple hundred under the rule of the Judges, this chronology doesn't make sense. Judah's descendants would have to have fathered their kids when they were 70 years old, or older. Is there another explanation that I'm missing?Yes, David. There is.
The Bible is not history.
Stop expecting it to make sense, hang together, and be consistent, let alone match the facts as provided by any other source.
Accept that the book just isn't true.
