Waiting for Breakfast

In the early morning of a gray October day this large (size of the first joint of my thumb) spider hung in the mist between two pines, looking as though she were floating in the air. Only from one angle could her newly-spun web, still perfect, be seen. I don't know why she's there, so conspicuous, but there she was, still and waiting.

The light was on this side, so I couldn't get a good picture of her back; even in the gray dawn there was just too much sun directly in front of her - and I didn't walk back that afternoon. Maybe she'll be there again some day.
