The Week in Entertainment

TV: Last Holiday. I'd never seen this, but it was really enjoyable. Formula, perhaps, but well-executed formula, and well-acted by all, Depardieu excellent as usual, and Queen Latifah is so good. Silver Hawk - not bad for what it was, but honestly... to paraphrase Seth Evil, why didn't Alexander just shoot her? That hugely elaborate fight sequence was cool to watch, but made no sense at all. Torchwood - it occurs to me that this show, last week, and Pushing Daisies deal with the same topic - bringing a dead person back for a minute - and yet, wow. How different. This week Torchwood gave us one of those Russell Davies "outsider looking in" shows (like "Blink" and "Love and Monsters"), this one with a quintessential Davies message - what we have here is what there is. Pushing Daisies - More super-saturated color, more bizarreness. Continues to be worth watching. Heroes - I do not like West. Has Bob really changed? Or is that Niki? And is she "keeping an eye" on Mohinder, or just keeping "an eye" on him? And no stupid Matt! Though that did, of course, mean no Nathan... Oh well, we can't have everything. Speaking of which, it would have been totally cool if they'd had Ivan and family speaking Ukrainian instead of Russian. Seeing as they live in Ukraine, you know. Not that there aren't plenty of Russophones in Odessa. But it would have been cool... I'd like to think it was a statement on the Company, but it's probably just because that actor they got is Russian. House - Too bad Foreman's back, but I do think it's funny that every one of the Numbers pegged him as subordinate to Cuddy, and Cuddy as subordinate to House!

Read: Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World - Haruki Murakami is a genius, and Alfred Birnbaum is a great translator. This book is a tour-de-force with a surprising ending. Reread Good Omens (I've lost track of how many times this is).
