Here's the thing
Tiger Woods is undeniably the greatest golfer of this generation. And this is not his fault. But it's why I so often find myself rooting for his opponents, even when they aren't such a great underdog story as is Rocco Mediate.
Rocco was tied with Tiger after 18 holes of a playoff. That means that over the last four days he played as well as Tiger.
But who is it we kept seeing over and over again? "This is what Tiger did Thursday." "This is how Tiger played the par 5s." "This is what Tiger did over the weekend." "Anything can happen, and we've seen just about everything from Tiger this tournament..."
Guys, there are two stories here. One is Tiger, bad knee and all, playing for his
Just one not-Tiger bit wouldn't kill your ratings.
Unless, of course, you didn't save anything Rocco did. Since, after all, it was just Rocco...

Exactly. That's exactly what I've been thinking for years now.
Give Tiger the historical montage -- but round by round he's not the only amazing golfer out there.
(btw: It was Tiger's 3rd US Open. He won at Bethpage Black in '02 and Pebble Beach in '00.)
The problem is you want them to use a news judgment.
The judgment they are applying is a marketing one.
Readers care about Tiger, so that's what they cover.
Maybe readers *might* care about Rocco, but maybe no, so they don't give him ink.
Actually, I'm talking about the broadcasters. They kept talking about how amazing it was that Mediate was challenging Tiger in a playoff, but they didn't show us any of what he'd done over the weekend. If we're watching the playoff at 4pm on a Monday, we're interested in the game, not just Tiger. So it would have been nice to see Rocco's four best shots of the tournament, too.
And Wishydig? Argh. Of course you're right. How could I have mistyped that???
