The Week in Entertainment
Well, better late than never, I guess...
DVD: Doctor Who weekend ... The Two Doctors which reminds me why I didn't watch much Colin Baker - he's okay but the only reason he's not my least favorite is because there is Sylvester McCoy (oh, and Paul McGann, of course). And Peri is so annoying. And the Doctor setting out to kill someone - even Shockeye - that's not right. OTOH I adore Patrick Troughton's Doctor, always have, and Jamie is great. Then a box set the BBC calls "Beneath the Surface" - Silurians, Sea Devils, and Warriors of the Deep. Pertwee and Davison, Three's intelligent and capable companions and Turlough (who I always, perhaps perversely, loved) and Tegan. Very nice. Then ultimate geekiness took over with "Lost in Time" which is a collection of bits and pieces of Hartnell and Troughton episodes that weren't saved (it's amazing how little the BBC respected this show!). I loved the feature with Ian Chesterton (William Russell) narrating The Crusaders' missing parts.
TV: Doctor Who - "No weapons! Never any weapons!" and "You need to get yourself a better dictionary, and when you do, look up 'genocide'. There'll be a little picture of me there, and the caption'll read Over My Dead Body!" (see note above): that's the Doctor. And I love, really love, Donna's moral centering of the Doctor. And I love the attitude on Martha - a quarter Doctor, a quarter Jack, and half her - and fabulous. "I'm Dr Martha Jones. Who the hell are you?" Also, I DVR'd Charlie Jade but it bored me stiff in the first five minutes. Maybe I'll watch it later...
Read: The latest Nevada Barr, Winter Study: it's really lovely seeing Isle Royale in winter; A Superior Death remains one of my favorite books in the series. The Joss (thanks, Skulls in the Stars!) which is a nice, creepy early 1900s horror story. After Dark by Murakami - brilliant, as always, and a fast read, not as always. For some reason, I find it wonderful that the Japanese title is "Afutudaku". And the two Alison Taylor novels I hadn't yet read - Unsafe Convictions and Child's Play.
