This strikes me as odd

I saw an Acura commercial last night which had this sentence in it:
Your car informs you to avoid the next exit.
That sounds very strange to me - with an infinitive complement. I'd say either
Your car advises you to avoid the next exit,
or
Your car informs you that the next exit should be avoided.
Google gives me a lot of examples, though, although many of the hits are spurious (things such as "The sales clerk informed me, to my surprise and delight" and "It should be observed, that soon after my contract with Cazenove he received orders, as he informed me, to sell no more under sixteen shillings"). The good hits off the first page:
My doctor informed me to stop eating dairy, artificial sweetners, fruits and vegetables. I am at a loss as to what to eat.

I also asked Mr. Kreidenweis about the rental car, and he informed me to speak to Keith Collett, the manager of Superior Acura.

I went to Mr. Correa's desk and he informed me to report to Dale ... She also informed me to look for my assigned seat in his area when I went on break.

They informed me to fax them the paperwork in regards to the bankruptcy. The call was Four minutes and thirty nine seconds.

I told him that they informed me to come to Cairo to understand the situation but he told me that he is sorry and thanked me for being patient!

Informed me to call the helpdesk to change the address.

She further informed me to leave or she would contact security and also made ... She informed me to write a letter to Corporate if it made me feel better!
With "informed him" the proportion is higher - though there are still plenty of false hits ("The Pythia vouchsafed no reply to his inquiry, but informed him, to his horror, that he was fated to kill his father and to marry his own mother.""... and shot the marshal who was dressed as an officer, and informed him, to put him off his guard, that they did not want him..." "... her majesty was never once consulted in it, whatever his preceptors, the politicians of Button's coffeehouse, may have informed him to the contrary." and this one from 1912: "Lord Avebury expressed great appreciation when THE NEW YORK TIMES correspondent informed him to-day that the wireless message he sent from here reached New York on Saturday night in twenty-two minutes.")

Here, the majority of them seem at least quasi-legal usage, including a lot of complaint sites:
Bernardyn told Wapinski that it was getting slippery, and Wapinski informed him to get moving. Shortly thereafter, Bernardyn was stopped again by Wapinski ...

Detainee reported the police informed him to provide a written request to the Gan Island police station when he telephoned on 12 September 2006.

Mr. O’Donnell informed him to file a motion before Trial Chamber III.

Family doctor stated that oral surgeon has been calling his office numerous times and that he informed him to stop calling his office as well as his patient ...

I informed him to remove my work ph# and to not call here again as I had already mailed BestBuy a payment. He stated that it was too late.

I informed him to please refer all calls to my lawyer as soon as possible but I was not sure he heard since he was still yelling over me.

I informed him to confront Mr. Qualls for his money. He stated the Mr. Qualls gave him a story that the check was dated wrong and to run it again.

I informed him to look at the notes. He continued the same story and treated me like a liar full of BS...

I informed him to go ahead and pull the motor so when the regional service manger came in the following week, he can assess the damages further.

David said his hands were tied, I told him that I understand, & informed him to let Dan know if they keep putting me off they will receive a phone call from my Insurance Agent & my Attorney.

... he dismissed Jiang Ziya, but carefully informed him to ignore any such voice that may call forth his name upon his return to the Western Foothills, ...

We informed him to order a background check, or a local detective (Which would cost $1000.00 + ). He ordered our background check and we started ...

Thus, he went to the personnel office, and they informed him to file a piece of paper stating that he desired continued benefits. ...
So it seems to be catching on. But it still sounds distinctly odd to me. How about you?
