I have "one" in my yard, and I, too, have been calling "him" Chuck for many years. I put the quotes there because unless woodchucks live tortoise-length lives or exhibit parthenogenesis, there must be more than one, and there must be two sexes. The "Chuck" who I see now has to be the great-great-great grandoffspring of the one I first saw 19 years ago.

Yet, I've only ever seen one individual at a time on my lawn, chomping away at the weeds. And, whether it be politically correct to say this or not: they all look alike to me.

And Chuck looks kind of sluggish, but he can really book when he thinks it's time to hide!

Occasionally I see two - very occasionally.

And my goodness yes they can run fast. Almost rippling over the ground.

My niece used to say the rhyme with "groundhog" (How much ground would a groundhog hog...). But since half the trickiness of it is the homonymity of "wood" and "would", it's not quite as amusing...
