Off-year cicadas
This summer the cicadas have been loud. Oh, nothing like a brood year, of course - in brood years literally hundreds of thousands of cicadas are constantly calling, filling the whole day and night with their buzzing song so there is literally no silence. But this year they've been loud enough. Still, I haven't actually seen one - again unlike brood years, when they're everywhere - till yesterday, when I spotted this one, newly emerged from his shell. And the Japanese lantern trees were dotted with empty shells.
