Ryder Cup
Well, the US managed to get a lead on Thursday, 5½ to 2½. (Last year after Friday it was 4-2, and in 2004 6½ - 1½ - both for Europe.) We might manage to avoid a skunking. Heck, we might even win.
A lot of stuff I saw in the paper this week were of the "Will Tiger's absence hurt?" variety. All I could think was: NO. The man is the greatest golfer of our time, but his Ryder Cup record sucks. Not having him on the team and feeling obliged to play him can only be a plus for Azinger. (Too bad Lefty didn't hurt himself a little... his 1-7-1 record is nothing to shout about, either.)
Mahan and Leonard went 2-0 yesterday - first time since 1993 the US has had a double win on the first day.
Friday's foursomes (alternate shot) were 3-1 (two wins, two halves) for the US, and fourballs were 2½-1½. My man Sergio was one halve and one loss - he's sitting this morning, which is a very strange sight at the Ryder Cup. We'll see...
Currently, the Europeans are leading the two matches underway; match three is just starting.

i have always rooted for europe in the ryder cup. probably because i always liked faldo so much -- aloofishness and all. the american sense of entitlement to a team victory because of individual strength has always bothered me.
i agree about tiger and phil. this is not individual medal play. it's team match play -- and then some individual. they are clearly not dominant in the team play format. we can go so far as to say they're just no good at the team play format. tiger is no loss. golf writers should realize this by now.
I pull for Europe too. I loved the matches in Spain, when Seve took the US to the cleaners. This is a team event, and the Europeans really play team better than we do.
