Joyeux Anniversaire, Albert!
Albert Camus was born on this day in 1913, in Mondovi, Algeria. He spent a summer in Oran - where he witnessed an incident on the beach between a European and several Arabs which he later worked into The Stranger - and then moved to Paris just in time for WWII. I managed to go a long time without actually reading Camus (just reading about him), but this year I read The Plague and The Stranger. I wish I'd read him earlier.

I haven't read much Camus at all, in fact, I'm not sure I've read anything but The Stranger (when I was in school, a long time ago, trust me!) but that scene where Mersault kills the Arab, the description of the sun hitting him in the eyes, has never left my menory. I still think of it at times when the sun shines painfully in my eyes.
