Today
The polls will be opening soon, and I'll be leaving soon. Got to teach at 8, so I might have to go back this afternoon. (ed: I will have to go back. Got there at 7:10 and there were already at least 100 people in line outside - and there, that means another 30 inside. Some elections there haven't been 150 all day. Big turnout - good news.)
If it's still Tuesday when you read this, and you live in the US, and you're eligible, and you haven't yet - go vote. The importance of this election cannot be overstated. If it's not, or you don't, or you have... Hold on to hope.
I'd like to say a word to the undecideds. After two years - after the last seven years - it seems to me that there can't be many reasons for you to be undecided still. It's not the issues, is it? And that's all right - we're human, flesh and blood, not calculating machines. But I'd like to ask you to take a minute and think about something.
Think about those crowds at Sarah Palin rallies. Think about what the McCain campaign has been appealing to - John McCain hasn't take a question at a rally in a month. John McCain not taking questions? He thrives on town halls. Even he is afraid to hear what they say, and you can see it in him in the last rally where he did take questions. Look at those crowds, really look at them, and remember (because I venture to guess you're my age or a bit older). Remember.
Are those people the ones you want to stand with now?
If not, and if you can't vote for Obama, then vote for Bob Barr, or Ralph Nader. Or write in Mike Huckabee or Mitt Romney. Or leave the top of the ticket blank. You can do that. Vote down ticket - you know what kind of Congress you want to see, you know your local candidates - and just don''t stand with the people you know (or you wouldn't still be undecided after so long) you don't, can't, stand with.
