What was that again?
Here's a sentence from the book review column (The Hemingses of Monticello) in the paper here in Oak Ridge:
Slavery was an institution that Thomas Jefferson and his companions openly criticized yet secretly practiced.Secretly practiced? Nobody knew about it? (As a friend remarked, "Slaves? Why, no! These are my two hundred and seventy, uh, children-- hired hands! Yes. From, uh, Sweden. Right, boys?")
That's just ... bizarre.
