Oh, snap. Word. Etc.
Over at Language Log, in comments to a post on possessive vs. objective case with gerunds, the answer containing a lengthy cite from the totally wonderful Merriam-Webster Dictionary of English Usage, someone asks, "Do the LL cognoscenti have a particular preference for MWDEU over Garner?" Another commenter sums it up beautifully (and the best part? You could substitute a lot of names for "Garner" here.):
The MWDEU makes its judgements on the basis of the evidence. Garner finds his evidence (when he has any) on the basis of his judgement.
