Really?

Is it just me, or does this sentence seem... well, strange?
The speaker of Guinea-Bissau's parliament took the oath of office as president Tuesday, a day after the man who ruled this tiny, coup-prone West African nation for 22 years was gunned down in front of his wife inside their villa.
I mean, "coup-prone" nations don't generally have a 22-year-long rule, do they? They have 22 years of, well, coups.

Yes, I suppose you can have an unsuccessful coup (people are always talking about successful ones), but it seems odd, still.
