Happy Birthday, Fred
Today in 1899, in Omaha, Nebraska, Fred Astaire was born. You have to see him in action to appreciate him - and though many have stronger and better voices, Astaire introduced a huge number of songs. Composers enjoyed writing for him because of his impeccable phrasing and feel for the song. His name is shorthand for grace. And after his dancing days were over, his affable screen personality still got him many a good part.
Our homeward step was just as light
As the dancing feet of Astaire
And like an echo far away
A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square
