Happy Birthday, Stephen
Vincent Benet, that is. Born in 1898. This fragment is one of my favorite bits of poetry - it's from The Army of Northern Virginia and is describing Traveller. I love it for its sentiment and its complexity.
They bred such horses in Virginia then--
Horses that were remembered after death,
And buried not so far from Christian ground
That if their sleeping riders should awake
They could not witch them from the earth again
And ride a printless course along the grass
With the old manage and light ease of hand...

His short story "By the Waters of Babylon" has always been a favourite of mine.
