I just don't get it
Probably because I'm not a parent but... This sort of thing (from Carolyn Hax's holiday discussion) baffles me:
We're trying to plan a wonderful first Christmas for our son at our house, which is also his first birthday. You know what? He's one. He's not going to remember whether it was "wonderful" or full of complaining grouches. He's really not.

What's not to get?: it's for the parents, not the one-year-old. And they'll have pictures and videos and all to show him later, when he'd rather just be playing World of Warcraft XXIV.
Actually, what struck me about it, before I saw your comment, was the idea that "our house" is "also his first birthday."
Yeah, of course, but it's always "for" the kid, and they stress out so much over making it perfect for him - and he's ONE.
