Non-Rhotic Rs
I'm watching a British tv show called The Chief, about a new chief constable taking over a county-level police force. He's arrived in the middle of two crises: a protest against wetland development, and a brewing prison-guard strike. The prison is called Staunton ...
Oops.
No, it's not. They just drove past the sign. It's Stornton.
I will never get used to anticipating that non-rhotic pronunciation. (I'm not sure how they do, for that matter...)
