Butterflies of early September

Here are some photos of butterflies in the little park by the Metro. Some are new to me, and some are just gorgeous no matter how often I see them.

buckeyeThere were so many buckeyes I felt like I was in Ohio!

buckeyeThis guy's been roughed up a bit. Gorgeous eyespots, though, aren't they?

zebra swallowtail
A first for me - a zebra swallowtail!

zebra swallowtail
What a beauty!

This is a male whirlabout, or at least I think he is - a little skipper that usually doesn't get further north than South Carolina. But we have had a hot summer.

Peck's skipper
A Peck's skipper - we so frequently overlook the little ones, flitting about the grass, but can't they be just as beautiful as the big ones? (Here endeth the lesson)

checkered skipper
This is a first for me - a checkered skipper. Look at him - he's actually blue. Not his wings, his hair!

northern crescent
A northern crescent, probably a male, in an unusual head-on pose.
