True that, Vsevolod...

I just ran across an interview from July (at Shuum.ru, a Russian political and cultural magazine) with poet Vsevolod Emelin. In the course of the interview, he remarks:
Нынче назвать кого-то фашистом, то же что назвать козлом. В обоих случаях это означает только то, что данный человек вам неприятен.
Which means, in a Russian-flavored translation:
Nowadays calling someone a fascist is exactly the same as calling them a goat. In both cases, it only means that the person is someone you don't like.
Substitute "nazi" for "fascist" and "asshole" for "goat", and there you have it...

It's strange to me that those terms have become so generalized and meaningless.

I think I'll just start calling people kleptocrats. It's not over-used, yet, and still somewhat poignant, right?

(P.S. I hope it's not creepy that I'm commenting all over your blog. I promise it's only 'cause I think you're interesting.)

Not at all - comment away!

And kleptocrat is a fine term, especially for our current government.
