A third-order goal

Here's a thoughtful look at Julian Assange and the philosophy behind WikiLeaks. It's probably not what you think it is, by the way.

There have been leaks ever since there have been secrets, and this has not deterred governments and others from trying to keep secrets. In the short term, the leaks will probably cause agencies to more closely guard their secrets. That will not keep people from spilling them, as they have for thousands of years, but it also will not end secrecy. In the end Assange is just another egotist who thinks he can change the world where others couldn't. The one he has hurt the most is the poor fool who apparently gave him the secrets. If he is the responsible party, and if he is convicted, there is a high probability that he will spend the rest of his life in prison.
