Not the same thing
I get it. I really do. It was traumatic. People are shaken up. Two men are dead.
But.
What's the value of the "it's happened again!!" hysteria at Virginia Tech? The "violence rocks the campus again" headlines?
Four years ago, a severely disturbed student started shooting other students and professors in a class building. Yesterday, somebody shot a cop during a traffic stop.
These are not the same kind of occurrences. Except for the location, and the ubiquity of guns, they really have nothing in common. And the second one is far, far too frequent.

Amen. I was confused all morning, listening to NPR and wondering what the shooting had to do with the college at all. Finally read the NYT and learned the victim was a *campus* policeman.
So true. Radio news left me mystified about the connection to the college; finally I read the NYT and learned the victim was a *campus* cop.
