Portuguese and plum(b)s

Planalto Central - how badly did Alex mess it up, Kathie?

But more seriously, I can't believe that guy lost a spelling bee because he spelled "plum" as "plumb" - if he didn't ask for the definition, he spelled it correctly as he heard it! What a travesty.

Tonight's "Jeopardy!"/"Wheel" hour was canceled on Pgh's. NBC affiliate in favor of the Critz/Altmire Congressional debate, so I'll never know what I missed.

In general, "Planalto Central" would be pronounced approximately "plah-NAHL-too sen-TRAHW" -- where terminal "L" is sounded like the consonant "W" -- as though one had a slight speech impediment re "L" in English (think of Kripke, er, Kwipke, on "Big Bang Theory").

Well, as you can probably guess, Alex prnounced it "plan-AHL-toh sen-TRAHL".

At least the guy who got the "provocateur" clue said it with a business-like Frenchness, depriving Alex of the chance to repeat it in correction...
