Day Nine: Baltimore
Today we braved the heat (brutal) and went to Baltimore to look at my friend's favorite writer's house and grave - Edgar Allan Poe. It's unfortunate that the Poe House has lost all its city funding; they're in some financial straits, but trying valiantly to make do. This sign on the way seems symbolical (and the guy looks like he's looking at the fallen man, doesn't he?):
Here's the house. Poe lived there before he moved to Richmond - and of course, he's buried here in Baltimore as well.
Here's a rather recently discovered portrait of his wife Virginia, at 15 - the famous one is of her dead, but this one shows her living beauty
Why is this like a raven?
A nice portrait of Poe
A Gustav Doré illustration of the raven, sitting, never flitting, on the pallid bust of Pallas just above a chamber door
A bust of Poe, with a wreath left at the grave
And on to the grave! This is the church
Here is the original gravesite - it's the one where most of the tributes are left
And the newer memorial
