Day Eight:: Youngstown to Laurel
Last day. Easy drive right until the end. Worst traffic since Chicago - and not on an interstate - plus the derecho (don't you love how we're all using that word like we hadn't just learned it 3 days ago?) had knocked out the power in my building, so my friend and I got a hotel in Laurel.
The Ohio Turnpike. My West Coast friend was groaning at all the tolls...
Welcome to Pennsylvania!
the toll ticket - I like the "pay once as you exit" system instead of the "keep stopping and paying over and over again" one.
... But my friend had to admit the service plazas are great!
The trees along the road cut make for an odd sight
Farm exhorting us to Drink Milk
And a wind farm
The tunnel under the Allegheny Mountain
Entering Chesapeake Watershed area
Finally - Welcome to Maryland!
And welcome to wrecks in the Greater DC Metro Area rush hour!
US Route 1 - a bookend to US 101 we traveled before!
Gwen weathered the power outage okay, thanks to marvelous Myra! who kept her well supplied with water. But she's in the hotel now, too.
And... got home to no power. Went to the apartment and collected my cat and went to a hotel. Hot and dark: not doing it for who knows how long...

1. Shoot, you came within 3 miles of us. Had we known, we would've driven out to our local turnpike exit to meet up at a nearby ice cream parlor!
2. As a deep-rooted native Westerner, I share your friend's distaste for toll roads (it was bad enough having to pay fares to cross major bridges out there).
3. Our power went out late yesterday afternoon -- yes, on the Fourth of July, when there were doubtless fewer than usual repair crews on duty, and probably some were down in the DC area, instead -- and it stayed off till past midnight. So we missed not only "A Capital Fourth" on PBS live at 8 PM EDT -- a tradition for us going back to before it even began, when it was still the Beach Boys on the Mall -- but also the roll-over immediately afterwards. Oh well, at least we could sit on the kitchen porch and view our community's fireworks display.
4. Gwen is magnificent, as if she doesn't know it!
Darn. Wish I'd known!
My power is STILL out.
Poor Gwen! (You too, but cats don't understand)
