Happy Birthday, Walt

Walt Kelly at drawing board with sketch of Pogo
Today is the birthday of the great Walt Kelly, who gave us the incomparable Pogo.

The drawing was impeccable and unmistakeable, the wordplay brilliant - embellished by the lettering, which added to the characterizations - and the stance and stories unique.

Who can't sing at least the first part of this?

Deck us all with Boston Charlie,
Walla Walla, Wash., an' Kalamazoo!
Nora's freezin' on the trolley,
Swaller dollar cauliflower alley-garoo!

Don't we know archaic barrel
Lullaby Lilla Boy, Louisville Lou?
Trolley Molly don't love Harold,
Boola boola Pensacoola hullabaloo!

And of course, this line has become immortal:

we have met the enemy and he is us

But let's not forget Simple J. Malarkey and Mole MacCarony, aka Joseph McCarthy and Pat McCarran, either.
