Saucer magnolia
This is a fine old saucer magnolia that's been in the yard for a long time. Blooms like crazy in the spring, as you can see.

Language Liberalism Freethought Birds
Verbing Weirds Language only if you're expecting it to work in a simple way. This is a special case of the more general truth that Language Weirds.
Only when a republic's life is in danger should a man uphold his government when it is in the wrong. There is no other time.
The church says Earth is flat; but I have seen its shadow on the moon, and I have more confidence in a shadow than the church.

I just finished David Crystal's "The Story of Be", and Chapter 6 is "Visitational Be". He notes
"During the twentieth century, it was increasingly common to see the verb used without the prepositional phrase. Usually, the visit is related to an occupation: the person has come and gone professionally. The location is taken for granted."The examples in the book (Has the doctor been? The gardeners have been. You can tell me daughter and her dogs have been.) seemed odd to my American ear.
Natural over here in Blighty though. And in questions with “yet”. ‘Has Father Pancake been yet?’

As I turned into the driveway in the dusk I saw something gray trotting across the road.
