The Week in Entertainment
TV: John Adams part 4 - it continues to be excellent. The first meeting between Adams and King George was quite moving. Twelve Monkeys - extremely good. The Rare Breed - I'm fond of that film for reasons I can't quite put a finger on. Jakob the Liar, good. The Weight of Water - not so much. The Norwegian story was better told but so predictable I guessed the "secret" way too early. The contemporary story is boring, despite the cat-four storm that they throw in for no good reason, and Sean Penn apparently found it boring, too... his performance may have been meant to be haunted but it was just lackluster. And in no way were the two stories ever tied together. NCAAW Tournament Regional Final and Semifinals. Torchwood - at some point Gwen will have to start trusting that Jack knows what he's doing. (I do wonder why she didn't at least offer Nicki retcon...) And poor Rhys: even when it's supposed to be his turn to talk about what he wants, it's Gwen they end up talking about...
Read: Arrrrrgh. I was ten pages from finishing The Grasshopper King and pulled it out of my bag to check a quote - and left it on my desk at the office. I am hopeful of being able to recommend it without reservation - certainly to this point Ellenberg has been both deft and inventive - but there is some terrific revelation in store and it might be disastrous. I doubt it, but ... dammit. I can't wait till Monday. I did read The Book of Old Houses - a nice intertwining of those light mysteries with the Cthulhu Mythos, quite rewarding.
