Birds on a snowy day

Yesterday was a good day for birds, snow notwithstanding. A few were new to me - the white-throated sparrows, at least, though I might have seen them flitting around before without knowing just which LBJ they were. But it's mostly house and song sparrows around here, especially in the summer. There were also two pairs of cardinals - one thing about winter, you can see the females! And more...

A male cardinal

female cardinal and sparrowHis mate, and some little sparrow - possibly white-throated?

white-throated and house sparrowsTwo white-throated sparrows (!) and I think a house sparrow

song sparrowA song sparrow - and he was singing up a storm

chickadeeA chickadee, also making noise to greet the day.

red-winged blackbirdAs was this guy. This is exactly the time of year the redwinged blackbirds showed up last year and the year before, but this year, as he calls to claim his territory (same tree they fought over last year), he's got to be thinking, "WTF? Snow??? What happened to spring?"

cardinalFemale cardinal - the second one

cardinalAnd her mate, still a bit gray from his winter coat, and also whistling like mad.

yellow-rumped warbler
I think this might be a Yellow-rumped Warbler! If so, it's a first!
